C5 Aircross, on the rear bumper it has some clear lacquer and it's all peeling off now. Underneath seems fine and the normal bumper plastic.

Not sure if this is from factory or last owner added it? It's the only place that seems to have it.

I'm presuming, as never noticed it when bought, that it's started to come off after jet washing.

So is it on all C5 Aircross, should I replace it, or take it off?

If the bumper is actually painted then it will have a clear coat. Many have body coloured skirts, and some have the black onyx paint and therefore a lacquer. Some may just have the black plastic skirt without lacquer.

I'm trying to determine if they were painted with lacquer over or not.

Underneath it seems that it's just plastic bumper like the front, so not sure. As not the original owner I don't know.

I wonder if I should just try and peel it all off, as at moment it looks awful

You might find that a bit of a job as in some places it will be like a plastic sheeting and hard to release. Ideally the rear skirt should come off to do it properly, then you could treat it with some of that black T-CUT permanent black dye.

Someone suggested using a jet wash, which is how I think it's originally started coming off.

What I don't know is why it's on, and if it should be, and can I just take it iff

Is the bodywork covered for first 2 or 3 years ?

If lacquered, it's there to provide some UV fade protection so it doesn't discolour prematurely.

You're basically asking the same as why can't a take the lacquer off the body paintwork ! You can if you sand it off - it's protection...

Body work is warranted for up to 12 years I think, - check your service booklet, but this requires specific checks to be undertaken at a cost at periodic times for it to be honoured.
